Titel — a town where the Tisa meets the Danube

There's a little town in Vojvodina that few people know about. And that's a real shame.

Titel stands where the Tisza flows into the Danube. The views alone are worth the trip. But the most amazing thing here isn't even the confluence of the rivers or its thousand-year history..

The only "mountain" in the middle of the plain
Picture perfectly flat Vojvodina. Fields, fields, fields… And suddenly, out of this endless plain, rises a tall hill with sheer cliffs up to 60 meters high.
It's actually not a mountain but an ancient loess plateau — one of the most unusual geological monuments in Europe. Tens of thousands of years ago, glacial winds carried the finest dust here, building up this hill layer by layer. Today geologists call the Titel Plateau one of the best-preserved loess sections in Europe. You can literally read the history of the ice ages in its layers.

A history spanning millennia
People lived here as far back as prehistoric times.
Then came the Romans, followed by the medieval Hungarians, the Ottomans, the Habsburgs… Thanks to its position on the high bank of the Tisa, Titel has always been a strategically important place. Whoever controlled the crossing controlled the trade routes and the movement of armies.

The Titel Battery
In the 18th–19th centuries the town was part of the Military Frontier of the Austrian Empire.
This was where the famous Titel Battery 🚣‍♀️ was based, an elite unit of the river flotilla. The soldiers served on special boats called šajkas, patrolled the Danube and the Tisa, and guarded the empire's southern borders against the Ottomans.

🏘What to see in Titel?
In just a few hours you can do a lot here:
• climb to the viewpoint on the Titel Plateau and catch one of the most beautiful sunsets in Vojvodina;
• learn the sinister legend of the Schmidtmayer chapel;
• touch the ruins of the medieval Titel fortress;
• stroll through the old cemetery, where Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant and Muslim graves lie side by side. Strikingly beautiful 19th-century tombstones survive here, as well as graves of Russian émigrés who fled after the revolution and the Civil War;
• wander the quiet streets of the center;
• see old churches of different denominations;
• drive out to the spot where the waters of the Tisza merge with the Danube.

And also…
In spring and summer the area around Titel is especially lovely.
Floodplain meadows, oxbow lakes, marshes, flocks of sheep, genuine well sweeps that still work here to this day, and an incredible number of birds. The main rule is not to rush: get out of the car and walk along the picturesque fields.
Right nearby is the Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski Rit nature reserve, one of the best places in Serbia to watch storks, herons and other waterbirds. And if you just cross the Tisa, you'll find yourself in Perlez, a village where stork nests sit on almost every second pole.

Titel isn't the kind of town you visit for big-name sights or museums.
People usually end up here by chance. And then suddenly realize they've spent half a day here, completely losing track of time. You stop being surprised that in Serbia the most unexpected discoveries often await not in the hyped places, but in small towns that hardly anyone talks about

The Šmitmajer Chapel on Titel Hill

When I was digging into the history of Titel, what interested me most were the ruins of an old chapel at the top of Titel Hill.

Here's what I found out: it turns out locals call the hilltop Golgotha, and these ruins are the former Schmidtmayer chapel (Šmitmajer kapela), now one of the most mysterious abandoned buildings in Vojvodina. For more than a hundred years its ruins have been surrounded by legends.

What is known for sure
• The chapel was built in 1892 by Franz Schmidtmayer and his wife Maria.
• A German inscription with the construction date survived above the entrance for a long time.
• It was built in memory of their late daughter Gisela. Researchers believe the chapel also served as the family crypt.

Architecturally it was a small Catholic chapel with elements of late Baroque, Classicism and Neo-Gothic. Today only the walls and some decorative elements remain.

But it wasn't the architecture that made it famous.
According to local legend, a poor girl named Maria regularly bought lottery tickets 🎟️ and asked the literate Franz Schmidtmayer to check them for her. One day she supposedly won a huge prize. But Schmidtmayer hid it, kept the lucky ticket for himself and soon unexpectedly became one of the richest men in the district: he bought land, a mill, a brickworks and a large estate.

Maria cursed him with words that, in various versions, go roughly like this:
"May the earth cast out your bones, and may everything of yours be cursed."

Some time later, the Schmidtmayers' only daughter died under unexplained circumstances. The grief-stricken parents built the chapel, buried their daughter there and devoted themselves to religion, but soon lost their wealth as well.

And so the legend was born that the curse did catch up with the Schmidtmayers.
Ever since, the place has been considered mystical.
According to local folklore, accidents happened near the chapel. In the 20th century a boatman took his own life here because of unrequited love. People also tell of strange incidents during attempts to restore the chapel. That's why for many years lots of Titel residents tried to steer clear of this place.

Of course, it's important to understand: these are all beautiful local legends, not confirmed historical facts.

Interesting fact
In Serbian, the word «Ostaci» simply means «ruins» or «remains». That's why maps often show «Šmitmajer Kapela — Ostaci», i.e. «Ruins of the Šmitmajer Chapel». It isn't a separate site, just a note on the chapel's current state.

Looks like I've found a new place for a Halloween trip🎃

Photo exchange: Kovilj and Titel, May 9!

I've never brought back so few photos from a trip. I just didn't have time to take pictures🙈

Honestly, every time we go to see the storks it's pure delight! And today, thanks to Irina (Radio "Water Thrush"), we learned maybe even too much about storks)) That a stork can eat a baby goat or a cat is, of course, .
We also saw different herons, cows, swans)

We picked wild mint for tea, found a few poppies and lots of yellow wild irises

To complete the picture of village life, we went to a farm! So after the educational part we landed in a real tactile paradise. We petted and fed the farm residents — from a kitten to a donkey) The goose stuck its tongue out at us, hissed and yelled🙈, the goats were sweet and affectionate, and the horses snatched our apples like seasoned racketeers!
We treated ourselves to acacia, mint and nettle juice.

Then we went for lunch, where we literally had bread and circuses. While we ate, we watched anglers reel in 🎣 fish one after another! The kids quickly made fishing rods out of sticks, got line with hooks and a worm each from the fishermen — and happily fished too. A whole hour of peace)))

We looked at the Crna Ćuprija monument (spomenik). Today it was wrapped in thick clouds and looked even more impressive. Just as it should look on this day!

And this day would have been completely wasted if we hadn't stopped by Titel! Titel won our hearts! Titel is a dream town! We even looked up real estate prices in Titel. I literally had to force people onto the bus — that's how much they didn't want to leave!

And on the way back to Belgrade we got the most epic sunset!

All in all, today felt like an alumni reunion: all familiar faces, and the new people instantly became part of the gang)
I think we had a great time! What do you say?

And I hope we'll see each other not in a year, but sooner)

Share your photos! Thank you all, hugs to everyone!
