Bački Petrovac — a town of broken hopes

Bački Petrovac - a town of broken hopes💔

25 km from Novi Sad, on the fertile Bačka plain, among cornfields and sunflowers, lies Bački Petrovac — a town with a Slovak soul.
More than 65% of residents are Slovaks, descendants of 18th-century settlers. They still speak Slovak here, Slovak is taught in schools, and the signs are bilingual. In the centre stands the Evangelical church, surrounded by neat houses with tiled roofs.
This is where Slovačke narodne svečanosti takes place — one of the largest ethno festivals in Vojvodina. There is also a festival of kulen, homemade wine, kvass and beer.

As tourists, what interested us here was the ethno house-museum from 1779. Judging by the photos on Google, it's a very colourful place. We also spotted an old well on the map.

And if fate brings you to Bački Petrovac, be sure to stop by Kulpin.
It's a small, charming village that smells of hay, quiet and calm.
We came here to visit 🏰 the Dunđerski Palace. The forgotten pearl of Vojvodina - white, elegant, with columns and linden alleys — as if it got lost somewhere between Vienna and Novi Sad by accident. Besides the palace itself, there's also the Museum of Agriculture of Vojvodina, with a collection of old tractors, ploughs and items of village life.
📍 And two kilometres from Kulpin, on the road to Silbaš, you can spot right from the road a beautiful late-19th-century windmill — a "vetrenjača".
There used to be dozens of them, each feeding several villages, but only a few have survived to this day.
🌀 This mill has been preserved almost in its original form: with wooden sails, albeit broken, a stone base and a round body clad in boards.

🍂And now, attention, a question: did we manage to get in anywhere at all?
In the photos — an idyll: a palace, a mill, little houses with tiled roofs.
In reality — a journey into the kingdom of closed doors.

🏰 The Dunđerski Palace is under renovation. The gates are closed, with construction fencing in the courtyard. The Agricultural Museum is open Monday to Friday, 9 to 15.
🌬 The windmill is a drama of its own: it stands behind a fence, visible but unreachable. Closed.
🏡 The ethno house in Bački Petrovac is also open only on weekdays, 10 to 14.
And the well has been filled with concrete. And that's it, that's all.
So if you, like a normal person, came for the weekend, all that awaits you is tourism through a fence and opening hours that don't match real life.

At some point you start to suspect that tourists simply aren't expected here🙈.
All that's left is to wander the streets, look at the old doors and admire what you can see through the fences. And then, charmed by the local colour, you forget about the museums. You just stand there, look around and say with a smile:
"This is the Balkans, baby! Oh well. Not today. But it's beautiful, isn't it?"

And where did you fail to get into in Serbia?
