Fruška Gora: snowdrops, sunflowers and the fields of Vojvodina

It seems everyone and their dog has written about the snowdrops on Fruška Gora by now. So I guess it's my turn)

A week ago our little nature club went on a photo hunt for snowdrops. To be honest, even the most optimistic forecasts
were nothing compared to the sea of flowers we found. Literally the entire forest on Fruška Gora is carpeted with snowdrops. It's impressive, especially when you see them for the first
time, like I did.

I got curious why there are so many snowdrops in Serbia, while in the Urals, the Moscow region, and the Leningrad and Yaroslavl regions I never
came across them at all.

And it turns out there are two versions of where snowdrops came from. The first is that they originally inhabited the Caucasus, supported by the fact
that the largest number of species still grows there to this day: 16.
According to the other version, the snowdrop's homeland is Europe, or more precisely its mountainous southern part and the Balkans in particular. That puts everything in its place. We are, in fact, in the homeland of the snowdrops!

And now a legend that the Serbs would really
love.
When God expelled Adam and Eve from Paradise, it was winter on earth and it was snowing. Eve was freezing and began to cry. She sadly remembered the warm
gardens of Paradise. To comfort her, God turned a few snowflakes into snowdrop flowers.

So the first flowers on Earth may well have been
snowdrops. And chances are they were among the very first garden plants. Which, all in all, is not surprising:
the first flowers after a dreary cold winter.

So it turns out we were lucky enough to see snowdrops in their native habitat. Maybe that's
also why they're so beautiful here

And to make everyone who wasn't scared off by the cold weather and went looking for snowdrops truly happy: in some cultures
they are considered harbingers of luck, bringing material prosperity and success to those who spot them at the start of the year. Hooray!! We're waiting!!

And a little cultural symbolism -
In Greek mythology the snowdrop symbolized the return
of the spring goddess Persephone from captivity in the underworld.
In Christianity the snowdrop symbolizes the purity and innocence of the Virgin Mary.
But in Victorian England the snowdrop was associated with
death and mourning and often appeared on funeral wreaths.

It seems everyone and their dog has already written about the snowdrops on Fruška Gora. Well, then it's our turn) — photo 1It seems everyone and their dog has already written about the snowdrops on Fruška Gora. Well, my dears, we did it!! Thank you so much for the company!
We got a taste of a real hike! We climbed up the mountain, froze in the wind, warmed our hands by the fire — just like real hikers!

Most importantly, today we saw a whole sea of snowdrops, and also lungwort, violets, hellebores and squills! It was so beautiful we couldn't stop taking photos. We followed wild boar tracks. We looked down at Ledinačko Lake from above and stormed the Kula. And even the youngest participants walked the whole route on par with the adults. Not even the chilly weather could stop us) We ate blini with condensed milk, with jam, with salted caramel) We roasted marshmallows and sausages over the fire and drank pine-cone tea. What an aroma🥰
We held a tug-of-war championship. The team of @A_Yuliya_A won 🤝🏆 We revived the ancient folk game of Rooster Fights 🐓
We made and burned a Winter effigy ourselves. And on the way back we even checked out the TV tower! We warmed everyone up on the bus and brought them back to Belgrade!

And now let's have a contest: who's got the most beautiful snowdrop?😉🔽
Share your impressions, photos and videos of the plants, blini, landscapes and the hike participants, of course! 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞

News from the fields of Vojvodina 🚜

Last weekend, undeterred by the bad weather, we drove out of Belgrade. We explored the Serbian countryside.

Even though work in the fields is still going on, you can feel that autumn is already here🍁. The colors are yellow, warm, so warm. The little villages are cozy and picturesque; the locals were a bit shocked by our invasion, but they were very friendly.
We noticed that the combines leave empty corn cobs behind. And the locals are busy collecting them. We helped them out a little, and as a thank-you we got a gift – a quince from a tree next door. Astringent, but sweet, just right)

🌽So here's the question: we couldn't figure out what these dry empty cobs are for (see photo)? And only the red ones! The white ones were thrown away. Animal feed? Or maybe for lighting fires?
Help us figure it out
