Ostrvica, an extinct volcano an hour from Belgrade
🌋 Ostrvica — a real volcano in Serbia
Few people know it, but in central Serbia there is a genuine ancient volcano — Mount Ostrvica. It lies in the Rudnik massif, a little over an hour's drive from Belgrade.
The summit is about 758 m high and looks very unusual: an almost perfect stone cone rises sharply from the wooded hills, so it can be seen from many kilometres away.
🌋 Why it's a volcano
Ostrvica is an extinct volcano, part of the ancient volcanic region of Šumadija. It formed millions of years ago from igneous rocks — andesite and dacite. The age of these rocks is estimated at around 18–20 million years.
There were once eruptions here, and today what remains of the volcano is a stone «neck» and the remains of lava flows that you can see on the rocks.
⛰ What's unusual about the summit
Ostrvica has two «teeth» — two rocky peaks separated by a gap of about 10 metres. This is the result of how the thick lava cooled and cracked.
Because of this shape, the mountain looks almost like a set from «The Lord of the Rings».
🏰 A medieval fortress
On the summit stand the ruins of the Ostrvica fortress, which protected the rich mines of Mount Rudnik. The fortress is mentioned as early as the 14th century and played an important role on the Belgrade–Dubrovnik trade route.
Locals and merchants took shelter here during the internecine wars of medieval Serbia.
🌿 Today Ostrvica is a protected natural monument and a popular hiking spot. The cliffs offer panoramas of Šumadija and the surrounding villages.
Route for a one-day hike:
Start from here
It's an 11.5 km loop with about 570 meters of elevation gain.
At first it's all easy-going:
• forest
• a gentle trail
And then the most interesting part begins
The last 15–20 minutes:
• a steep climb
• rocks
• in places you need to use your hands
• a cable runs along the rock itself
Nothing super extreme, but:
⛔️in rain/mud
⛔️in "flat-soled" sneakers
— better not
By the way, it's really cramped at the top — not for a big group.
All in all, Ostrvica is exactly the kind of place that makes you go, "this is in Serbia?!"

Ostrvica is a hill in the Rudnik massif that towers over the villages of Varnice, Zagrađe, Dragolj and Trudelj in the municipality of Gornji Milanovac. The summit is 758 meters above sea level. In origin, Ostrvica is the remnant of an eroded volcanic dome.

Photo exchange from the friendly hike "Ostrvica — Vertical Limit"!
Who would have thought this route would turn out to be so interesting and so tough! Honestly, we didn't expect it at all — and neither did our knees, it seems.
It all started with an incredible number of spring flowers. We saw countless hellebores, corydalis, violets in all sorts of shades, squills and many more flowers whose names we don't even know yet.
The cornelian cherry was blooming in yellow balls and the camellia in red flowers, and the first cherry blossoms were already opening on the branches.
The forest is coming alive: bees, butterflies, beetles, birds — all tirelessly buzzing, fluttering and singing.
And then came the ancient volcano, frozen hundreds of thousands of years ago. Ancient people once built a fortress on its summit. To get there, you had to walk over rocks and along a sheer cliff above an abyss, holding onto a cable. That's when we understood why this route is so unpopular))
There was a lot of swearing, it was scary, there was even a descent on our butts! But we had a well-prepared team and we made it! Although now that I'm home — not sure about the others — I'm lying on the couch with my legs up and can't get up🙈😂
As a bonus, we petted a little baby goat, saw a family of rams and wild boar tracks!
All in all, thanks to everyone who came! It was an awesome hardcore hike! We SURVIVED and that's what matters!
Thanks to our Ed for such incredible emotions!!!🫶🏻🙏🏻
Share your impressions and send photos ⤵️
And see you on the next route!! Love you all🫶🏻🤗
