Vršac — an island of the ancient Pannonian Sea
Standing by Vršac Castle and looking out at the endless plain around you, it's hard to believe that you're standing on a former island, surrounded by the floor of an ancient sea.
Millions of years ago the whole Pannonian Plain was covered by the huge Pannonian Sea. Isolated heights rose out of the water like an archipelago, and the Vršac Mountains were one of those "islands". When the sea retreated, the plain remained, and these hills still stand in the middle of it as a reminder of the old landscape.
⛰️ Where the "mountain" in the middle of the plain came from
The Vršac Mountains are made of very ancient, hard rock, much older than the plain around them. Such solitary mountains are called inselbergs (from the German for "island mountain"): over millions of years wind, water and rain smoothed everything around, while the tough rocks of Vršac held out.
🏰 Vršac Castle
The castle was built right on top of this "island", and not by chance: from here you can see the entire Banat plain, which means anyone approaching is visible from far away.
When you stand at the top with the wind blowing, it really feels like you're above the sea, only instead of water there are fields 🌾

A hike-walk through blooming Vršac: the route
On 21 March 2026 we went to Vršac instead of Uvac, and we didn't regret it.
The route. An easy hike-walk: we start in the centre of Vršac, climb up to the castle, stroll over the hills and stop at the viewpoints. On the way there's a stop at a café for a coffee with a view.
- loop of 10–12 km (or until you get tired of it 😁);
- elevation gain of about 500 m, so it's still a long walk;
- in spring it's not only the town that blooms, but everything around it too.
How to get there. From Belgrade by your own car or by a transfer that we organise if a group comes together. At the end of the day we have dinner in one of Vršac's restaurants.
These are non-commercial trips, just a company of like-minded people 👣 Announcements of upcoming hikes are in our Telegram channel.

How we wandered around spring Vršac
Vršac is love at first sight. And if you're lucky enough to come here in spring, consider yourself lost.
The beauty started already on the bus: clouds of blossoming trees, giant wind turbines, trees with dozens of crows' nests and pheasants strolling across the fields.
And then we found ourselves in the blooming centre of Vršac, and it was impossible to set off on the route right away. So first we had coffee among the blossoming trees and old bas-reliefs.
All in all, the hike turned out to be a hedonistic one. We walked past the main sights and headed up towards Vršac Castle, gasping along the way at either the architecture or the magnolias.
In the forest the real flower madness began: lungworts, corydalis, honesty, squills, grape hyacinths and a whole assortment of unknown but very beautiful flowers. Purple, blue, white: that rare case where "a carpet of flowers" is no exaggeration at all.
From the castle we suddenly spotted… the Vršac Taj Mahal 😄 Seriously. If you know what this building is, tell us!
At the top we met a goat, a pony and geese.
We didn't manage to catch a sunset with a glass of wine in a café overlooking Vršac and the fields: the sunset decided to skip today. But we found a great restaurant with indecently tasty burgers: Gastro Pub Princip. We call it a fair trade.
Another great day in the collection. Thank you to everyone who was with us on this little adventure 🫶🏻
